Beach Poetry is a unique performance poetry venue that has been a dynamic part of the cultural climate of Chicago since 1990. Such greats as Maureen Flannery, Andrea Change, Carlos Cortez, Lisa Buscani, the Aztec Dancers, Malachi Abaja, Marc Smith, Michael Warr, and Neal Pollack have been featured here.

Beach Poetry was founded by award-winning poet and playwright, Cathleen Schandelmeier on North Avenue Beach when the venue where she was hosting shut down for renovation.

The Beach Poets earned Schandelmeier the title "Poet Laureate of North Ave Beach" by the Chicago Tribune in 1996. The Beach Poets have also appeared on "Wild Chicago".

This amazing happening is now located at Loyola Beach, on Greenleaf and the lake, The Beach Poets takes place from 4 pm-5:30 pm every Sunday afternoon in the summer.
